How much can a tanker weigh?
The weight varies from country to country, just as the permitted total weight will also depend on the number of axles. In Denmark, a trailer tanker with 6 axles may weigh a maximum of 50 tonnes, and a trailer tanker with 7 axles or more may weigh a maximum of 56 tonnes. In Norway, a trailer tanker with 6 axles or more may weigh a maximum of 50 tonnes. In Sweden, a trailer tanker with 7 axles or more may weigh a maximum of 64 tonnes. In this case, however there are different requirements concerning the axle distance.
How long may a tanker be?
In Denmark, a front carriage and trailer may be maximum 18.75 metres, and a semitrailer may be maximum 16.50 metres. In Norway, a front carriage and trailer may be maximum 19.50 metres, and a semitrailer may be maximum 17.50 metres. In Sweden, both a front carriage and trailer, and a semitrailer, may be maximum 24 metres.
What is a baffle plate?
A baffle plate is installed inside the tank to avoid the liquid sloshing back and forth on acceleration or braking. A tank or space in a tank may contain maximum 7,500 litres. If the space or tank is larger than this, a baffle plate must be installed in accordance with legislation.

A cleaning hatch is an opening inside the tank where a washing system is placed in order to wash and clean the tank’s interior. A cleaning hatch is typically 300 mm in diameter.

When a tank is oval-shaped, this is to give the tanker a low centre of gravity. This makes the tanker more comfortable and manoeuvrable to drive, such as around corners. Milk tankers typically have an oval-shaped tank.
What is the difference between a pressure tank and a depressurised tank?
Pressure tanks have a working pressure above 0.5 bar. Chemical tankers and feed tankers will usually have a pressure tank. Depressurised tanks have a working pressure below 0.5 bar. Milk tankers always have a depressurised tank.
What are ATP, ADR and PED?
ADR is the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. This means that the required tank code must be stated, as well as the substances which the tank is to carry (UN numbers).
PED stands for the Pressure Equipment Directive and determines the rules for pressure-bearing equipment (> 0.5 bar). PED tanks are used, for example, for feed, beer and other tankers that do not carry dangerous goods.
ATP is an EU Directive which sets out the regulations for international transport of perishable foodstuffs. The tanks must be approved by testing the heat coefficient in order to ensure safe transport of food products across national borders.
How long does it take to produce a tanker?
This varies according to the type of tanker concerned, but it typically takes three to six months to produce a tanker.
